Sumi-e is the Japanese word for ink painting.
The formation of the Puget Sound Sumi Artists was borne out of the desire of several ladies to join together to study this art and also calligraphy (shodo) and flower arranging (ikebana). The organization was started in 1986 in Tacoma and now numbers over 70 members from Tacoma, Seattle, Bellevue, Mercer Island, Federal Way, Bremerton, Everett, Olympia and other Puget Sound communities. Many members are teachers and instructors who offer regular classes; members are often in community schools teaching sumi-e and sharing brush writing with students.
Membership in P.S.S.A. is open to amateur and professional artists 18 years of age or older who create original works in sumi painting (sumi-e) or Asian calligraphy (shodo); and/or those interested in promoting the same in Washington State. Membership dues are $30 annually, due in January. If you wish website listings it is an extra $60.
Our group exhibits extensively throughout the region with shows from Mt.Vernon to Olympia and everywhere in-between, including eastern Washington. P.S.S.A. also exhibits in Japan and many members submit pieces to the national sumi-e society. While we are an active and vital group we are accepting of artists of all levels, especially beginners.
